Being a leader means being a glue stick

Justin Vajko • March 27, 2026

Being a leader feels a lot like being a glue stick.

(stay with me, this analogy is going to make sense)

When you start building a team, you’ll hit gaps in communication immediately.

“Oh, I thought you meant x, y, z…”

“Sorry, didn’t catch that last part…”

It’s a shift that can feel messy, but it’s part of the growth process.

As a leader, you’ve got to be the glue that holds those communication gaps together.

One thing my team does to smooth out communication issues is having weekly team meetings and using Slack to keep everyone on the same page

Eventually, you’ll want to delegate that “glue” job.

You’ll want to find someone with an operations mindset, a detail-oriented approach, and a high sense of responsibility.

That’s who I have in my business.

She's not naturally detail-oriented, but her sense of responsibility is her superpower.

(It’s actually her second top strength according to StrengthsFinder.)

Sidebar: StrengthsFinder is a game-changer when you start building a small team of like 3-4 people. It helps you identify where your collective strengths lie and where each individual shines.

Instead of trying to shore up weaknesses, you can leverage strengths to solve problems and move forward faster.

At EOD, leadership isn’t about doing it all yourself. It’s about solving problems your team will encounter and removing barriers so that everyone works together smoothly as one organization.
